2019-5-31  The Morenci mine in Greenlee County, Arizona(Fig. 1), produces copper from supergene andhypogene deposits. Historically, the highest-grade oresat Morenci were oxide copper deposits within skarnand massive chalcocite from enriched veins andstockworks in monzonitic stocks. With the depletionof these high-grade ores, mining progressed to open-pit methods to recover copper from the immensetonnages of relatively lower-grade chalcocite usingconcentrators. The implementation of SX-EW tech-nology in the late 1980s at Morenci provided for therecovery of copper from oxide copper and low-gradechalcocite that is not of sufficient grade for concen-trating. Morenci currently recovers copper fromconcentrating, heap leaching of chalcocite, and run-of-mine leaching of oxide copper and chalcocite.
